CU News

The time has arrived to defend the credit union exemption to Congress.

This week, CUNA and the state credit union leagues are launching a national action alert to preserve the tax exemption. To help ensure success, we must engage every credit union CEO, volunteer, staff person and member in relaying a simple message to Congress. "Don't Tax My Credit Union."

Take action now by contacting your Member of Congress by visiting www.DontTaxMyCreditUnion.org and clicking on the "Take Action" link.

Why is now the time to take this action?

Both houses of Congress are considering possible legislation to reform the tax code. They have repeatedly said that everything is on the table, and may take the "blank piece of paper" approach - meaning that all exemptions would be removed from the tax code and Congress would start from scratch to write a new tax code.

If Congress takes this approach, all tax exemptions, including the credit union exemption, would be gone. We would then be forced to advocate for the tax exemption to be included in the new code while competing against not only banker opposition, but also the more than 400 other non-profit organizations that have special status under the current tax code. Waiting for a tax bill to be introduced is too late; we must take action NOW to ensure that Members of Congress keep their collective hands off our tax exemption. Here are the specific action steps that credit unions can take starting today:

Action Steps

  1. Congressional Contacts: Credit union CEOs, volunteers and staff, visit www.DontTaxMyCreditUnion.org and contact your Member of Congress by no later than June 30th.
  2. Register for Hike the Hill, June 5-7th: We need a strong showing of credit union advocates in Washington to bolster congressional contacts back home. If you're not already planning to attend, please re-consider; there is no registration fee and the hotel block has been extended until this Friday, May 17th. To register, please contact Brandon Walker for more information.
  3. National Webinar, May 22nd: Participate in a national webinar on the Credit Union Tax Status on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 2:00 p.m. CST. The webinar is free and you can register here.
  4. Engage your members: Make use of the various tools and resources in CUNA's Credit Union Tax Advocacy Toolkit to engage and activate your membership. Share your credit union's story of member and community service with lawmakers and the public via earned and especially social media. Our campaign will utilize the Twitter handle @CUNAadvocacy and #DontTaxMyCU, as well as the CUNA Advocacy Facebook page.
  5. Preserving the credit union tax exemption is the number one legislative priority for CUNA and CUAOk. Oklahoma has 1.5 million members who can send a loud and clear message to Congress: Don't Tax My Credit Union!

IMPORTANT: Debit Card Limits Lowering

Currently our daily limit on debit cards transactions is $1,000.00 The credit union is lowering this limit to $500.00 effective immediately.

Although this will be an inconvience for some of our member’s it will decrease the amount of debit card fraud. Which is at an all time high in the financial industry right now.

If you need to make a purchase over the $500.00 limit, please call & speak to a Me/CU representative. We can temporarily increase your limit so you may make your purchase.

Thank you for your understanding.
